Those who didn’t hear about “I Will Always Love You” are out of this planet. No matter how old or how young you are, you’ve definitely listened this single at least once and know who’s playing it. But how much do you know about the singer who so beautifully performed it in front of millions of tearful fans worldwide? This article presents the rise and fall of Whitney Houston, a super diva that was once believed to be madly adored until the end of times. Only that fate had other plans for her and our shining rising star turned into a dim falling star.
If you, my reader are very young, then you’re probably asking what happened with this wonderful singer, better said with the most successful singers in pop music history. Well, the beginning of her rise was actually the beginning of her fall. For two decades, Whitney Houston was rising to prominence, rise that became a fall immediately after she met husband Bobby Brown. Her behavior changed, she was often hours late for interviews, photo shoots and rehearsals, and canceling concerts and talk-show appearances. Then, at the beginning of 2000 airport security guards discovered marijuana in both Houston’s and husband Bobby Brown’s luggage at a Hawaii airport, and rumors about her drugs usage started to bloom.
Twenty years of hard work and fame were followed by more than ten years of decade and negative reviews. In 2009, the diva appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s season premiere and she admitted using drugs with former husband, Bobby Brown, describing to Oprah that she “laced marijuana with rock cocaine”.
She is the most awarded female artist of all time, according to Guinness World Records, and her list of awards include 2 Emmy Awards, 6 Grammy Awards, 16 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010, so it was practically impossible for her to completely vanish from the music scene. Despite her troubles and struggling with drugs, she tried several times to return to music but every time she did it was or a very short success by releasing a hit, or a total failure followed by severe criticism. Two years ago, she declared herself healthy and clean but in 2010, her tour overseas was troubled: Houston canceled some dates due to illness and received negative reviews from fans who were disappointed in the quality of her voice and performance.
Now, the 47-year-old singer is back in rehab as a representative for the superstar singer confirmed this very week, saying that Houston is in an out-patient program for drug and alcohol treatment. Her rep, Kristen Foster, said that it was a voluntary measure and part of Houston’s “long-standing” recovery process.
Nevertheless, whether this is a relapse or merely a setback, our falling star continues to be one of the world’s best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums and singles worldwide.
